Episcopal High School is most grateful to those farsighted benefactors who began the Endowment in 1984 with gifts totaling $200,000. In 1997, the School planned a campaign for buildings, endowment, and technology and began to actively seek endowment donors. In 1998 the fund began to grow thanks to gifts from many individuals and foundations. Since endowments are invested with only the interest income being available for spending, gifts to Episcopal High School’s endowment provide a perpetual source of income to the School while allowing the principal to grow.
It is no coincidence that the nation’s finest independent schools possess the largest endowments. To secure Episcopal’s position as one of Houston’s finest college-preparatory institutions, the endowment must grow. A firmly established endowment will provide resources for the School to plan for the future. As of June 30, 2010, the EHS endowment fund was $25,000,000.00.
Endowment serves three primary purposes: to preserve the value of the donors’ gifts; to provide a vehicle for increasing the value of the donors’ gifts after inflation and operating subsidies; and most importantly to ensure the continued existence of the institution. Income from the endowment is targeted for faculty professional development and compensation, financial aid for students in need, technology upgrades and advances, and campus improvements.
Episcopal High School’s endowment fund welcomes contributions and pledges of any amount. Named or designated funds may be established for any approved purpose with a gift of pledge of $100,000 or more. The School ensures sound stewardship of every named endowment fund through a memorandum of understanding that expresses the donor’s and the School’s intent. In addition, the School provides each donor of a named endowment fund with annual reports on fund performance and status.
