In Quiz Bowl, Comp-Sci, and UIL-like Big Contests, the growing EHS Academic Teams gained experience and proved themselves as strong competitors.

What follows is a recap of the Academic Teams performance during the 2023-24 school year.  A huge thanks to Mr. Scotty Johnson for coaching the teams and a shout out to Ms. Yen for the Speech/Debate teams, Dr. P. for all of the math competitions, and Ms. Rahman for laying the foundation for Academic Decathlon.

Academic Teams:

Quiz Bowl Team -

  • 41 wins this year, 71 in the last two years combined
  • One tournament championship in each of the last two years
  • Two appearances in the National Academic Challenge National Finals
  • On May 19, they went 3-3 beating teams from New York, Iowa, and Dubai

CompSci Team -

  • Competing shoulder-to-shoulder with elite Texas teams
  • Competed in a 12 intramural, 8 virtual, and 5 on-site contests
  • Taking the same test that UIL schools took at District Meets under same/similar conditions, EHS ranked 6th/258 4A Texas schools

UIL-like Academic Contests -

  • Cannot officially compete for District/Regional/State
  • UIL Championships, but may do on-site and virtual UIL contests
  • Competed in 5 virtual meets and 2 on-site invitational meets and did well
  • In April, took the same tests that the UIL schools did at their District Meets. Also hosted two other area private schools - Duchesne and St. Thomas' Episcopal.
  • At that meet, comparing our scores on the 11 objectively scored events, EHS would have ranked 10th overall out of 258.

Next Year -

With interest very high and growing, the program plans to continue and improve on this year's strong Quiz Bowl and Comp Sci success. Hoping to participate in more UIL-like big contests, students aim to make a name for EHS in the academic teams world. Mr. Johnson is working to recruit additional students as well as faculty to the program.
