The EHS Visual Arts Department is pleased to announce that a sculpture by Janie Hartman '27 is currently on display at the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston (CAMH), as part of its 14th Biennale, Out of Stock. The exhibition features artworks created by local teens that explore ideas of consumerism and consumption. Only 32 artworks were selected out of 158 submissions, making Janie's inclusion an impressive achievement.
Janie’s artwork, Chips, is a life-size wooden recreation of a McDonald's fry that she created in Beginning Sculpture. Janie was inspired by how “something so familiar and disposable as fast food could be turned into something more permanent” through wood. She shared that the process to realize her vision involved “a lot of trial and error, especially getting the shape and color just right.” Janie’s Sculpture teacher, Lauren Cunningham, adds, “My favorite detail is how Janie scorched the wood to give the fries a realistic charred look!”
Janie's inclusion in this exhibition extends Episcopal High School’s long-standing connection with CAMH. In the 25 years since the first biennale in 2000, Episcopal High School students have been involved with the show, either as exhibiting artists or as members of the student group that organizes it, the Teen Council. Alumna Kate (Kendall) Machin ‘03 exemplifies this connection, having served on the Council her senior year and now the Grants Specialist on the CAMH Development team.
Please join us in congratulating Janie, and we hope you will visit the exhibition, open to the public from April 11 through October 19.
