Tips for comparing financial aid offers:
First, make sure you understand direct cost (or billed cost), indirect cost (anticipated expenses), and total cost (those two added together) at each college to ensure you’re comparing apples to apples.
Compare the cost of each school subtracting only gift aid (scholarships and grants) from the total cost, then subtracting loans, and then subtracting work study and any additional options. You may find that different schools are the most affordable at different stages of this exercise. The final cost is critical in determining whether or not you will be able to pay your bill, but the cost before loans and work study is critical in assessing the best value offer. Loans and work study are great options to help you pay your bill, but they still represent money that you ultimately have to pay.
When assessing value, it is important to think of college cost as an investment; just like buying a car or house, the cheapest option is not always the best investment. Consider which college is the best academic and social fit for you. Consider which college offers the most additional value included in tuition. (For example, is study abroad included in tuition? Are there paid summer internships available?) Finally, consider which college will set you up best for post-graduate success — compare graduation rates, employment and graduate school enrollment rates, student loan default rates, job-placement programs, and access to alumni networks.

College affordability is not something that just comes up at application time. For 11th graders and their families, it needs to be part of the college exploration process. You and your family will begin having “the money talk.” It’s a confusing and sometimes intimidating topic, but there are ways to gain clarity so your family can engage in a more informed search. In this interactive Q&A, we’ll dispel common myths and also help you better understand:
**What tools and resources are available to help you understand your options.
**How to see beyond the sticker price and gain a better understanding of what you will pay.
**How to be financially realistic but also aspirational in your college search.
(Can't join us live? Don't worry. We'll send out a copy of the recording to all who register, regardless of whether you attend.)

Seniors - College Matriculation
Seniors: Please be sure to let your College Counselor know the results of your application decisions, including scholarship information. We want to celebrate with you. Seniors will need to commit to ONE school by May 1, 2023. Please note that double depositing might jeopardize the student’s acceptance. As always, please reach out to your college counselor if you have questions or concerns.

Paying For College

Applying for need-based financial aid to afford the cost of college?
If you are planning to apply for need-based financial aid to afford the cost of college, here are some helpful tips to get you through this process. Priority financial aid application deadlines are generally in February or March. Go to each college’s financial aid website for instructions on what documents they require to be considered for aid. Most schools will require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from US Citizens and Permanent Residents requesting financial aid.
Basic FAFSA Instructions:
- Students* and parents can use their prior year 2021 taxes to complete the FAFSA. Financial aid applications for students enrolling in college in the 2023-2024 academic year will be based on 2021 tax information.
- Create your FSA ID at Create Account | Federal Student Aid , Goodbye, Federal Student Aid PIN. Hello, FSA ID! | U.S. Department of Education. Students AND parents need a FSA ID to securely complete and sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically.
- Complete the FAFSA beginning on October 1, 2022 at FAFSA® Application | Federal Student Aid at You will need both student* and parent 2021 tax information.
Important Notes:
•The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to import your tax information directly from the IRS into your FAFSA electronically. Most colleges prefer (and some require) that you use this tool when filling out the FAFSA.
Additional Information:
Some schools will require the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (found at http://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile). The PROFILE is a financial aid application that many private and some public colleges use. This document will ask you for 2021 financial information. The College Board charges a fee to send the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE to schools. You may find a list of institutions that require the PROFILE on the above website; however, we recommend you go to each college’s financial aid website for document requirements and deadlines.
Some schools have their own financial aid application documents for you to submit. Be sure to check with each school to which you are applying.
