An exemplary student in my class is not always the one who gets high scores. It’s the student who shows an interest in learning something new, discussing opposing viewpoints, and being willing to take on a challenge.
My favorite topic is China. I’ve lived in China for several years, visited more than 25 times, and taken hundreds of students and adults to experience China for themselves. My three daughters are ethnically Chinese. Sometimes I get to teach a semester elective course called Chinese History and Culture. Those are always great semesters.
I like to read, and each semester I take several online book study classes offered by the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia. Through these classes, I get to read books about Asia and books by Asian authors. I also like to spend cool evenings (not too many of those in Texas) in my backyard next to a fire I’ve built. I frequently can be found reading there on winter evenings.
