FAFSA - Need Based Financial Aid
Parents of Seniors: The FAFSA and the financial aid awarding process both look different this year. The 2024-2025 FAFSA is available and has been simplified from previous years. To learn more about completing the FAFSA, click here. The Department of Education will not be sending FAFSA information to colleges until mid-March which means personal financial aid awards will be delayed. While colleges wait for information from the Department of Education, colleges have been updating their own websites with important information for you to review about how it may affect the financial aid award process. Thus, it is important for you and your senior to check each college’s website for important information. As a reminder, some colleges require both the submission of the FAFSA and the CSS Profile.

FAFSA, FSA ID, & CSS Profile
Parents of Seniors applying for need based aid for college: Students and their contributors need to get their FSA IDs. Beginning with the 2024–25 FAFSA, all contributors (student and parent) must have their own FSA ID. Also, many universities will also require the submission of the CSS Profile (which is now open for submission) for need based aid. Here is a list of schools that require the CSS Profile.
The new FAFSA is here. After a year of delays, the new federal aid application launched December 30th. Maintenance, pauses, glitches, and other obstacles have led to a rocky start, including delays for site maintenance. The Education Department is gradually increasing the form’s window of availability. Learn more about the soft launch period here. Additionally, be certain to review and check individual financial aid websites/resources/links for the colleges where your child has submitted an application for the most up to date information and required forms.

2023-2024: APPLYING FOR NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID TO AFFORD THE COST OF COLLEGE?
If you are planning to apply for need-based financial aid to afford the cost of college, here are some helpful tips to get you through this process. Students can submit their financial aid application as early as December 1. Each college will have their own priority deadline, and it is important to abide by those deadlines. Go to each college’s financial aid website for instructions on what documents they require to be considered for aid. Most schools will require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from US Citizens and Permanent Residents requesting financial aid. Begin your estimate for student financial aid here.
Basic FAFSA Instructions:
- Students* and parents can use their prior year 2022 taxes to complete the FAFSA. Financial aid applications for students enrolling in college in the 2024-2025 academic year will be based on 2022 tax information.
- Create your FSA ID at Create Account | Federal Student Aid , Goodbye, Federal Student Aid PIN. Hello, FSA ID! | U.S. Department of Education. Students AND parents need a FSA ID to securely complete and sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically.
- Complete the FAFSA beginning on December 1, 2023 at FAFSA® Application | Federal Student Aid. You will need both student* and parent 2022 tax information.
Important Notes:
•The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to import your tax information directly from the IRS into your FAFSA electronically. Most colleges prefer (and some require) that you use this tool when filling out the FAFSA.
Additional Information:
Some schools will require the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (found at http://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile). The PROFILE is a financial aid application that many private and some public colleges use. This document will ask you for 2022 financial information. The College Board charges a fee to send the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE to schools. You may find a list of institutions that require the PROFILE on the above website; however, we recommend you go to each college’s financial aid website for document requirements and deadlines.
Some schools have their own financial aid application documents for you to submit. Be sure to check with each school to which you are applying.
If you have any additional questions about financial aid, FinAid.org is a great resource. Of course, you’re always welcome to contact us as well!
Coffee and Conversations for the Class of 2025 & 2026
Parents/Guardians of 9th & 10th Graders: If you missed our Coffee and Conversations for the Class of 2025 & 2026 on Thursday, April 13th you can view the video here .
Tips for comparing financial aid offers:
First, make sure you understand direct cost (or billed cost), indirect cost (anticipated expenses), and total cost (those two added together) at each college to ensure you’re comparing apples to apples.
Compare the cost of each school subtracting only gift aid (scholarships and grants) from the total cost, then subtracting loans, and then subtracting work study and any additional options. You may find that different schools are the most affordable at different stages of this exercise. The final cost is critical in determining whether or not you will be able to pay your bill, but the cost before loans and work study is critical in assessing the best value offer. Loans and work study are great options to help you pay your bill, but they still represent money that you ultimately have to pay.
When assessing value, it is important to think of college cost as an investment; just like buying a car or house, the cheapest option is not always the best investment. Consider which college is the best academic and social fit for you. Consider which college offers the most additional value included in tuition. (For example, is study abroad included in tuition? Are there paid summer internships available?) Finally, consider which college will set you up best for post-graduate success — compare graduation rates, employment and graduate school enrollment rates, student loan default rates, job-placement programs, and access to alumni networks.

12th Grade (Class of 2024)
FAFSA - Need Based Financial Aid
Navigating College Decisions & Jewish Campus Life in the Current Landscape
Jewish Seniors and Families:
As you are making your final decision on where to attend college next year, we know you might have some questions and concerns about life on college campuses as a Jewish student. On Sunday, March 10th at 5:00 PM on Zoom, StandWithUs, Denver Jewish Day School, and de Toledo High School are partnering for an enlightening event on navigating the college selection process, tailored especially for Jewish high school students and families who are facing additional challenges after Oct. 7th. There will be the opportunity to engage in breakout sessions allowing you to hear from current Jewish college students and Hillel staff to gain valuable firsthand experiences and information. You can register for this event here. Please note that advance registration is required.
Sorority Recruitment
Attention parents of senior girls: Is your daughter interested in sorority recruitment? Plan to attend the HAPA recruitment roundtable at Memorial Church of Christ on Saturday, February 24th at 10:00 am. Click here for more information and to RSVP.
FAFSA & Need Based Financial Aid
Parents of Seniors: Federal Student Aid (FSA) has confirmed that the 2024–25 FAFSA is now available. It is important to watch individual college deadlines for FAFSA submission.
Class of 2024 - Financial Aid Information
Parents of Seniors applying for need based aid for college: Now is the perfect time for students and their contributors to get their FSA IDs. That way, you are ready to complete and submit the FAFSA as soon as it becomes available by December 31. Beginning with the 2024–25 FAFSA, all contributors (student and parent) must have their own FSA ID. Also, many universities will also require the submission of the CSS Profile (which is now open for submission) for need based aid. Here is a list of schools that require the CSS Profile.

PSAT Information
Paying For College
Helpful resources to have as students start receiving their financial aid offers:
FAFSA & Need Based Financial Aid
Parents of Seniors: Federal Student Aid (FSA) has confirmed that the 2024–25 FAFSA is now available. It is important to watch individual college deadlines for FAFSA submission.
Parents of Seniors: FAFSA Walkthrough - Get an overview of the FAFSA, the application required by all colleges nationwide in order to receive federal financial aid. We will walk you through the new Better FAFSA available in December 2023 for 2024-25. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, 7:00 pm ET / 4:00 pm PT and Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, 6:00 pm ET / 3:00 pm PT
Financial Aid 101 -- Overview of the 2024-2025 Financial Aid Application Process
FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATION: If you are looking for a 2024-2025 financial aid presentation for your families, we have a Youtube recording that you are welcome to use. It is a general overview of the financial aid process–essentially a classic “financial aid night”–with bookmarks so that viewers can jump to the topic they like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REobkIFFVkc
MyinTuition, a revolutionary online tool, ensures that students and their families have quick and easy access to the information they need to make decisions about college affordability. MyinTuition shows the projected cost of college once financial aid is factored in, helping students understand and plan for what college will cost.
https://collegecost.ed.gov/net-price
What is a Net Price Calculator?
Net price calculators are available on a college’s or university’s website and allow prospective students to enter information about themselves to find out what students like them paid to attend the institution in the previous year, after taking grants and scholarship aid into account.

- Launch of the 2024–25 FAFSA® Form
The 2024–25 FAFSA® form will be available in December 2023, not Oct. 1. Learn how to prepare for and stay informed about the FAFSA launch.
Seniors applying for need based financial aid for college: We are a few weeks away from students being able to file the FAFSA in December, but that does not mean you cannot be prepared. The FAFSA sheet provided by Sallie Mae has helpful tips.
Also, many universities will also require the submission of the CSS Profile (which is now open for submission) for need based aid. Here is a list of schools that require the CSS Profile.
Parents of Seniors applying for need based financial aid for college:
We’re still months away from students being able to file the FAFSA in December, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared. The FAFSA sheet provided by Sallie Mae has helpful tips.

College Board: New Digitial SAT
When Will My Student Take the New Digital SAT?
The new SAT will be released in March of 2023 for international students (class of 2024), and in March of 2024 for U.S. students (the class of 2025 will be the first class to encounter the new format). From that point, the SAT will be available only in digital format (there are exceptions for students with accommodations). The test will still be administered at schools and official test locations – you won’t be able to take the digital SAT at home.
Students in class of 2024: the new test will not affect the current junior class
Students in class of 2025: the new test will be available spring, 2024, when these students are halfway through their junior year.
