Dear EHS Parents,
Welcome to the start of a new school year! August is one of my favorite months of the year because it is a time that is filled with anticipation, energy, and enthusiasm. Students and faculty return to campus and a new cohort of freshmen and transfer students join our community. The air is full of excitement as friends old and new come together eager for knowledge and personal growth through the Four Pillars.
I often remind myself, my colleagues, and our students that we are grounded in something bigger than ourselves here. There are hundreds of students, teachers, and parents who came before us and there will be generations to follow. They all have had a hand in building our foundation in support of the School's mission and we will continue to build on this legacy this school year. We are part of an unbroken chain that extends back to our founders whose vision for an institution that focuses on an inclusive and joyful Christian community where students discover and develop their individual talents through the Four Pillars – academics, arts, athletics, religion – preparing for meaningful lives in service to others has always been our goal. It is gratifying to be a part of that legacy, and I am proud of our talented faculty and staff who work to provide our students the education they richly deserve, and you expect.
The heart of an Episcopal High School education is the relationship between our faculty and students as they engage in learning, and it is difficult to encapsulate that in a letter or on a website. When I walk down the hallway and see a math teacher working with her students well before the first bell and their conversations are animated and cheerful; when I notice one of our coaches consoling and helping an athlete who is learning a new skill and he responds with a smile; or when I see the lively, joyful interactions between advisors and advisees before and after a Chapel service with the entire student body and faculty present, there is no doubt that not even the constraints imposed by Covid could chip away at what makes EHS great … relationships.
We look forward to welcoming newcomers and reconnecting with old friends in person in the coming weeks. If you are a veteran volunteer to EHS, I encourage you to reach out to someone you may not recognize or know well and bring them along. Thank you in advance for all that you do to make EHS the outstanding institution that it is.
Best, Principal
Connect with your Children through Canvas Technology plays an important role in every EHS student's daily life. Canvas is our Learning Management System (LMS) and is a very powerful tool that allows parents to follow along with what is happening in each of their student's classes including viewing assignments, quizzes, discussions, announcements, and grades. The student calendar and to-do lists are important tools that Canvas populates with due dates and important deadlines, and you have access to them at your fingertips when you get connected. Thank you for joining us in this learning journey and we look forward to partnering with you and your family this year at EHS!
New Service Achievement Program Students were given a brief glimpse into our new Service Achievement Program in Chapel on Monday, August 23, with more information to follow next week. While all students are heartily encouraged to participate in service projects coordinated by our Students of Service (SOS) organization throughout the year as they are able, the Service Achievement Program is a year-long concentration within SOS, designed to give particularly interested students the opportunity to take a deeper dive into service. The program includes elements of learning, leading, teaching, reflecting, and serving. Interested students should plan to attend one of the following information sessions to learn more about applying to the program:
Parents, please discuss the program, which you can learn more about here, with your child if you think she or he might be a good candidate for it. We look forward to recognizing students who complete the program at the end of the school year with bronze, silver, and gold Knights in Service awards! Please contact the Rev. Beth Holden (bholden@ehshouston.org) with any questions.
