Dear EHS Parents,
We hope you are enjoying the start of the week with cooler temperatures filling our days. To note in this edition:
Strategic Direction for Diversity, Community, Inclusion
Earlier this month, the National Association of Episcopal Schools, of which Episcopal High School is a member, issued a call to all its member schools to reaffirm that our identity as an Episcopal school is by nature and theology bound up inextricably with becoming a more inclusive community.
At Episcopal High School, Diversity, Community, and Inclusion (DCI) are, as they have always been, a central tenet that informs academic, community, and student life. EHS has embraced Diversity, Community, and Inclusion concepts that are consistent with its Mission since its founding. Our decades of experience demonstrate that students of all backgrounds and social groups thrive because of their unique talents, experiences, hard work, and the academic, religious, and character education the school provides. We celebrate the unique merit of all students of all backgrounds and believe in developing their talents, diligence, and resiliency. We cultivate respect for and empowerment of the individual and reject stereotypes and prejudices. We are strengthened by the lively exchange of ideas among individuals of different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives. Our curriculum strives to amplify this commitment and uplift everyone. Every EHS student must feel they are known, respected, and divinely loved.
Following a months-long conversation, our own Board of Trustees adopted this Statement Providing Strategic Direction for Diversity, Community, and Inclusion.
Message from the Principal
At the end of this week, we will have completed the first quarter of the school year. As my father used to say, once you have children of your own, the days start to run together. Time does fly by, but this time of year is when our teachers pause to place the first set of grades into Senior Systems and to write course comments for your student(s). These grades, which simply represent a reference point along the way, will be uploaded and posted for your perusal on Wednesday, October 20 by 12:00 p.m. Teacher comments, however, will appear later on Monday, November 1. Please keep this in mind as you correlate the grades in Seniors Systems with the comments. If interested, you can get a real-time version of your student's progress by going to Canvas and checking the grade book for a specific course. When teacher comments are available to you, your student's grade in a particular class may have already moved a bit.
In regard to the narratives provided by your student's teachers, they are intended to provide you with a brief analysis of overall academic progress, an account of particular competencies, as well as suggestions on using or strengthening skills that will improve mastery. For year-long courses, it is still quite early, and in many cases, our teachers are just getting familiar with your student's learning style. As relationships develop, the connection will become more purposeful and help teachers to identify additional and/or more specific ways to support each student. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the teacher who will be happy to discuss his/her comments.
The overall consensus of teachers and students alike is that they are excited about the "normal" atmosphere and the focus it brings to the learning environment. We are certainly thankful for both.

Canterbury Circle: Interested Students are Welcome
The Religion Pillar continues to provide an opportunity for students to gather before school twice a month for food, fellowship, learning, and prayer. It's called "Canterbury Circle," modeled off Canterbury organizations at the collegiate level. While Canterbury organizations are typically targeted towards students who are Episcopalians, at EHS we welcome anyone who is interested to join us.
Parents, if this sounds like something that would be of interest to your children, please encourage them to join us on:
The current topic is "Suffering, the book of Job, and our responses." Meetings will be led by a team of students, working with Dr. Luu, Rev. Holden, and Rev. Callaham.
