Freshman Placement Test Registration

Science Placement Test (required)
This test examines the student’s basic knowledge of scientific concepts and his/her analytic skills; it is not course-specific. All specific information necessary for the test will be provided. The test is designed to take 15 minutes, but 30 minutes are allotted to allow for any extended time necessary. Students only need to bring a #2 pencil. Calculators are not allowed for the Science Placement Test.

Math Placement Test (All students are required to take either the Pre-algebra or the Algebra 1 test. Students who are currently in Geometry may additionally take the Geometry test.)
Both the Math department and the Science department use these subject-specific tests for placement. Students must score 70% or higher on the Algebra I test to receive high school credit for Algebra I and be placed in Geometry as a freshman. Additionally, they must score 70% or higher on the Geometry test to receive high school credit for Geometry and to be placed into Algebra 2. A study guide for each test is provided above. Math placement tests are untimed; most students finish either the Pre-algebra or Algebra 1 test in one hour. Most students who choose to take the optional Geometry test, which is given on a subsequent testing date, finish within three hours. Calculators are not allowed for the Math Placement Test.

Language Placement Tests (All students with any previous language experience are required to take one)
All tests have a written section and Spanish, French, and Chinese also include a listening section. Students seeking placement in Level II Honors or higher will also have an interview. Students with no previous language experience will take a Level I course in the language of their choice. Spanish I, French I, Latin I, and Chinese I (Mandarin) will be offered during the regular school year.

*Only students who have had no previous experience in their language of choice are exempt from taking a placement test.

Students must take either a Pre-algebra or an Algebra Placement Test, whichever course is the highest they are currently taking. Current Geometry students may, on a subsequent testing date, take the Geometry test. (check all that apply):

Science and Math Placement Tests will be administered on Saturday, April 13, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Scurlock Gym (drop off and pick up at the Brown Learning Resource Center along the drive nearest the parking garage). World Language Placement Tests will be administered following the Math Placement Test until 12 p.m. in the World Language Rooms in the Brown LRC Building. Considering the length of the morning, students may want to bring a bottle of water and a small snack.

If your student is unable to take the placement tests on April 13, he/she will be required to take the Science test and a Mathematics placement test on Thursday, April 18, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The makeup date for the Language placement tests is Tuesday, April 16, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. All students taking makeup tests should meet in the Grand Hall of the Jack T. Trotter Academic and Sciences Building.

Students currently enrolled in Geometry may take the Geometry Placement Test. They should take the Algebra I Placement Test on Saturday, April 13, and then may take the Geometry Test on either Tuesday, April 16 or Thursday, April 18, at 3:30 pm. Students meet in the Grand Hall of the Jack T. Trotter Academic and Sciences Building.

If your student has not completed all placement tests by April 18, he/she may not be able to register for courses in May, perhaps limiting his/her elective choices and preventing placement in Honors courses.
