Class of 2023: 2022 Coolidge Scholarship Information

The 2022 Coolidge Scholarship application is now live. The Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, four-year, merit scholarship that may be used by recipients for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any high school junior who plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2023 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (current high school seniors are not eligible to apply).

Coolidge Scholars are selected based primarily on academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: an interest in public policy, an appreciation for the values President Coolidge championed, as well as humility and service. Today’s competitive academic culture regrettably sometimes drives students to hype their accomplishments and pursue ambitious efforts merely to attain credentials. The Coolidge Scholarship pushes back on this trend. Successful candidates are indeed accomplished, but exhibit humility with respect to their achievements and pursue things of genuine interest to them regardless of the perceived prestige associated with the activity. A complete description of the scholarship’s criteria is available here.

The competition for the Coolidge Scholarship is indeed significant -- but even students who do not win have reported to us they are glad they went through the application process because it helps prepare them for college applications later on. Furthermore, the Coolidge Foundation invites 100 of the top applicants to participate in its Coolidge Senators Program, which includes an all-expenses-paid Summit Weekend in Washington, D.C and a one-time $1,000 scholarship. Applicants who make it to the finalist level, but do not ultimately win the full scholarship, also receive a modest one-time finalist scholarship.

Alert: the application requires that applicants read President Coolidge’s Autobiography and complete a few other reading assignments. While the book is not overly long, we encourage applicants to begin the application early so that they have plenty of time. Candidates who begin the application at the last minute are unlikely to be successful. The submission deadline is 5:00 PM EST, Wednesday, January 19, 2022.

Explore Canada for College -Virtual Information Sessions

Canadian colleges and universities will discuss not only their individual institutions, but also broad topics such as: advantages of studying in Canada, application procedures in Canada, timelines for applying, costs, scholarships, etc.  Each session will include a 20-minute Q&A as well. Through this event, students will discover the educational opportunities available in Canada by connecting with representatives from accredited universities across the country and discover the right one for themselves!

AP Update for the New School Year 2021-2022

AP exams will resume the traditional (pre-pandemic) schedule in 2022.  Exams will take place May 2-13.  You can see the complete testing schedule below.

• The cost is $96 per exam.  After November 15^th, there will be a $40 fee for any unused/canceled exam.

If you have a morning AP exam, you will report to your advisory first for attendance.  At the 8:10 bell, you will then report to your AP exam location.

Important Updates

AP exams will be administered May 3rd through May 17th.  Please see the schedule for the exams below. 

The cost per AP exam is $86.  The total amount will be reflected on your EHS student account.   

Digital testing options is only approved for remote learners and students/families with extreme extenuating circumstances.   

It is important to check all emails from Ms. Young as it relates to AP testing dates/times, test locations and any other pertinent information.   

Students may access AP preparation resources by logging into their College Board account at https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/. 

Important Reminders: 

• All exam dates are set by The College Board and are not flexible. 

• All students must review the AP Exam Terms and Conditions before their exam.   

• Students—especially seniors—need to indicate through My AP the college, university, or scholarship program they'd like to receive their free score report. Students indicate this information only through My AP. The deadline to indicate or change their free score report recipient through My AP is June 20. 

• Students should review the Calculator Policy for AP exams. 

• All world language exams will be administered with the use of an iPad and a Digital App Recorder.  Students should have the opportunities to practice using the devices in class before the exams.

Requesting Teacher Recommendations

We hoped you enjoyed the video during advisory a couple weeks ago !  

As you begin to ask your teachers for recommendations, here are a few reminders to keep in mind: 

Do

• Ask a teacher who teaches you junior year since they have witnessed your most recent growth as a student. 
• Ask in-person, if possible, unless you are remote.
• Ask a teacher with whom you have a solid relationship. 
• Be appropriate and intentional: send a thoughtful email and set up a meeting or call on Teams to speak with your teacher/s of choice.
• Feel free to speak with your college counselor about teachers you are considering to ask for your letters.
• Complete the classroom self-assessment form to help your teacher write the best letter on your behalf after s/he agrees to write for you. 

Don’t  

• Just email your teacher an emoji-filled question.
• Let your parents ask your teachers to serve as recommenders for you.
• Ask an advisor/coach who does not teach you this junior year.
• Ask a 9^th/10^th grade teacher who does not teach you this junior year.
• Be sad if a teacher shares that s/he does not think s/he is the best person to write for you, but do let your counselor know if this happens so that we can help you.

Interim Term with College Counseling - A power-packed, fun-filled two days of college preparation!

We enjoyed our time with the juniors this past Tuesday and Wednesday when we had the opportunity to share important information with them about the college search and application process.  You might be wondering what was discussed.  Juniors rotated through the following presentations:

1.        What it Takes!

From 30-year veteran Mrs. Julie Rollins, learn “what it takes” in the college application process as well as institution-specific details for schools many EHS grads have landed and loved!

2.        College Fit and Exploration 

College fit can be an important factor in the college process.  Ms. Rachel Lopez will provide an interactive discussion on college fit as you begin exploring the many future opportunities that await.  

3.        Nuts and Bolts of Naviance 

Naviance is a vital platform used in the EHS college process. Ms. Monica Lopez will explain the various functions of this resourceful tool as you start utilizing its many features on your own.

4.        Resume-Building 

The resume can be a daunting task in the college process – however, Mr. Jamy Champenoy outlines the many ways you can STAND OUT from the crowd.     

5.        Mind-Mapping and YouScience 

The college process is an integral opportunity for self-discovery.  Mind-mapping with Ms. Hope Young will provide you with a closer look inside yourself by identifying your interests, hobbies, and values that make you unique.  You will find out how these self-elements align with your YouScience assessment.  

6.        Let’s Move!

Feeling restless?  Mr. John Colello will lead a variety of games pertaining to the college application process.

Applying for need-based financial aid to afford the cost of college?

Basic FAFSA Instructions:

1. Students* and parents can use their prior year 2020 taxes to complete the FAFSA. Financial aid applications for students enrolling in college in the 2022-2023 academic year will be based on 2020 tax information.
2. Create your FSA ID at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm. Students AND parents need a FSA ID to securely complete and sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically.
3. Complete the 2022-2023 FAFSA beginning on October 1, 2021 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm. You will need both student* and parent 2020 tax information.

Important Notes:

•The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to import your tax information directly from the IRS into your FAFSA electronically. Most colleges prefer (and some require) that you use this tool when filling out the FAFSA.

Additional Information:

Some schools will require the 2022-2023 CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (found at http://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile). The PROFILE is a financial aid application that many private and some public colleges use. This document will ask you for 2020 financial information. The College Board charges a fee to send the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE to schools. You may find a list of institutions that require the PROFILE on the above website; however, we recommend you go to each college’s financial aid website for document requirements and deadlines.

Some schools have their own financial aid application documents for you to submit. Be sure to check with each school to which you are applying.

Through this event, students will discover the educational opportunities available in Canada by connecting with representatives from accredited universities across the country and discover the right one for themselves!

NACAC Virtual College Fairs 

NACAC's season of virtual college fairs for students starts this month.

Click on the date below to see which colleges will be there on each fair date and to register:

Each virtual fair is a free, one-day event. Attend as often as you like. Parents invited, too.
