Service and Outreach

Students of Service (SOS) exists to encourage and facilitate the EHS community in living significant lives through service to others. Our aim is to educate the EHS community about the needs present both within our community and in the broader Houston community, and to inspire students to develop a lifelong passion for service.

SOS serves with four charities throughout the year on a regular basis as well as serving at a number of special events.

Senior Outreach is a two-week volunteer program for EHS seniors in January. Each senior is assigned to an outreach site, where they take a deep dive into serving that particular community, as they spend all day with them, every day, for those two weeks. Many of our seniors serve at schools, working with children with special needs, living in under-served neighborhoods, or considered at-risk. Others from our senior class serve at shelters or other social service agencies throughout the Houston area. Their service does great good for our community but also makes a profound impact on our seniors themselves.

The Freshman Service Experience (FSE) integrates new students into the EHS community service ethos. FSE is launched in September with an on-campus workshop on service, and freshmen are sent home with a brochure describing several upcoming service project dates and locations. Each student selects one of the service opportunities to fulfill the FSE requirement in the fall semester. The class gathers at the end to reflect on their experiences of service and learn how they can continue to serve through the EHS Students of Service (SOS) organization.

The goals of the FSE are to help freshmen explore what "service to others” means, discover the many needs in our Houston community, learn about SOS and our service partners, and understand why EHS takes service seriously. We mean it when we say we want our students to grow and prepare for meaningful lives in service to others.

Many EHS students use their summer months to volunteer for service through their churches, travel organizations that focus on service, and on their own in the Houston area. Our service partners and some of the organizations in which our seniors do their Senior Outreach are often in need of summer volunteers. SOS can help connect students with service opportunities, both locally and internationally.
